Fish With Vinegar
Paksiw is a common recipe to Filipinos. It consists of fish, vinegar, ginger roots, garlic, onion, ground or peppercorn, chile peppers, salt and little bit of water. You just mix all the ingredients together, boil it and voila, you have a dish. You can use any fish that you want. I normally do milk fish and sometimes Galunggong. This dish can have a strong scent, so when you know that you are cooking this, it’s either you cook it outside, or if not possible, make sure your stove vent is on and you lit some scented candles. It doesn’t stink, but it has a strong sour smell, and because it’s fish, the fish smell can linger everywhere.
I love this dish and I won’t get tired of eating it, but, finding an affordable fish is a challenge. In the Philippines, Galunggong is one of the cheapest fish you can buy, they say that only poor people eat Galunggong..Here in the United States, you will buy it at the Asian store for $1 a piece. Woah! that much? I bought almost a kilogram when we went to Illinois last Christmas,a nd cooked it when we got home. It was only today when I finally ate the left over. I guess, I had enough that I am not planning on cooking it for at least a year or so.. I guess, my full stomach is talking right now..Once I feel hungry, I might consider cooking it again.
If you want to cook this dish, it’s very easy and delicious too. Take care, and enjoy your meal!
